Junior Quantitative Data Scientist:
Electricity Trading
At Volcore, our team of wholesale electricity traders and technical experts work together to model the electricity system and make real-time decisions. Our work is profitable and important to the energy transition, and we have several full-time, on-site openings in our technical team to underpin our rapid growth.
Our Data Science specialisation is for people who have proven they go deeper than anyone else to find hidden information in data, and to build software that benefits from that. We need to solve problems that no one else has cracked, and where the answer cannot simply be looked up. Our work requires practical understanding of real-world trade-offs and the creativity and smarts to build something that works, quickly.
Alternatively, if you are an exceptional programmer with less depth in Data Science and Quantitative Research, consider our Junior Software Engineer role.

Iteratively test hypotheses and develop proof-of-concepts to solve real-time forecasting problems.

Become a trusted expert in the topics you work most deeply on.
This role blends Data Science and Software Engineering, perfect for curious problem-solvers who enjoy tackling challenges end-to-end. It is full-time, in-person in our Manchester office.

High-performing, friendly team: Work alongside bright, driven people who are trusted to deliver and enjoy socialising after a successful day.
About You
-
No energy nor financial expertise required, but you must quickly learn new concepts and think independently. Ideally this should be demonstrated through passion projects or relevant work experience beyond coursework.
-
Strong modelling and analysis skills using Python and SQL. Deep research skills using R or a compiled language experience are also relevant. Unfortunately, dabbling with Python data science and ML libraries as part of coursework is not sufficient to meet this requirement.
-
Optimisation of performance and implementation of complex algorithms from scratch. We are looking for an experience where what already existed could not do what you needed, so you had to build something fit-for-purpose.
-
Excellent, practical statistical and mathematical knowledge.
-
The ability to document and communicate your thinking clearly, including in our knowledge base, notebooks, comments and code itself.
-
Ownership of projects from start to finish, with intrinsic drive to deliver high-quality work quickly, even if it means doing things you have not done before.
-
By the time this role commences, be eligible to live and work full-time in the UK. For the right candidates, we can consider visa sponsorship after at least 13 months of employment, as long as this is made transparent at the time of application.

The following are not essential, but you will benefit from highlighting any relevant experience:

-
Previous longer-term employment, even where not directly related to this role, e.g. hospitality and labouring.

-
Software development outside of academic study, including personal projects and professional work.

-
Meteorological data manipulation and physical systems modelling.

-
Real-time and online forecasting, especially time-series.
Typically this position attracts talented people who are looking to prove themselves at an organisation that will challenge them and treat them well.
Starting salary: £34,000 + participation in our bonus scheme for high-performers. As you deliver value over time, we pro-actively adjust compensation to reflect that.
To apply, please:
-
Submit your CV and a tailored cover letter highlighting how your experience meets the requirements for this role. We review these carefully and strongly recommend not using an LLM or generic template to draft it.

-
Complete our application questionnaire. We personally review each application, rather than using automated screening.

Thank you for reading this far. We look forward to hearing from you.
